Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: Heeling in Harmony is currently exploring virtual options to continue service to the community. Read more in our blog!
Heeling in Harmony is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, serving the Triangle. In May 2017, then-prospective UNC student, Thoai Vu (class of 2020), recognized a need for a program serving underprivileged communities, primarily the elderly, disadvantaged, or infirm. Mr. Vu's desire to bridge his passions for music and healthcare-based volunteering ultimately resulted in the formation of Heeling in Harmony. In August 2017, HH launched its first chapter for the undergraduate students of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In August 2018, HH opened its second chapter at the Virginia Commonwealth University. In August 2020, HH will start its third chapter at the UNC School of Medicine, focused on outreach to the UNC Hospitals.
Today, HH's primary program connects students with patients and residents at local healthcare facilities through individual performances and music-related activities. HH currently serves 3 healthcare centers - Carol Woods Retirement Community, Brookdale Chapel Hill Assisted Living, and the UNC Hospitals - and has served Carolina Meadows Retirement Community and Litchford Falls Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in the past. HH also offers a chamber program for its musicians to connect with peers and offers a different type of performance for patients and residents.
Membership in Heeling in Harmony is open to any student who is looking to serve the community. Service events are categorized by individual performances, as organized and prepared by members, followed by time for volunteers to interact with their audience.
